Learning objectives

The teaching of ICL is part of the training of informed and responsible international citizens and engineers.
The Centralien de Marseille engineer should be able to interact accurately and efficiently with partners of different languages and/or cultures, especially in a professional environment.
He/she will be able to mobilise linguistic, conceptual, cultural and communicative knowledge and know-how. He/she will acquire knowledge of historical, cultural, social, economic and political practices, events and/or phenomena. He/she will stimulate his/her imagination through cultural discovery and awareness of difference by varying his/her representations. He/she will develop his/her critical thinking.

Description of the programme

The teaching of ICL includes two separate courses per semester: English (LV1) 20h and another language 20h (LV2).
Please note: students enrolled in the Double Diploma programme will take two FLE courses (LV1 and LV2) in S5 and S6.
These 40 hours of classroom teaching are supplemented by 10 hours of personal work (independent work, research, exercises, etc.) per language and per semester.
ICLs are taught for 2 hours per language per week. Level groups are formed following evaluation tests in English, French as a Foreign Language, German and Spanish.
For beginner level LV2, students will benefit from 10 (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese) or 15 (German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian) hours of additional support.
NB: Students will only be able to start a language in semester 5.

Generic central skills and knowledge targeted in the discipline

Training in Languages and Cultures is essential to the identity of the Centralien engineer who must be able to communicate and interact internationally. The competences of the Ingénieur Centralien reference system particularly targeted by the LCI courses will be related to:


-C1: the Centralien Engineer creates value through scientific and technical innovation.
-C2: the CI masters the complexity of the systems and problems he/she encounters.
-C3: the CI leads programmes.
-C4: the CI manages in an ethical and responsible manner.
-C5: the CI is part of a strategic vision and knows how to implement it.

How knowledge is tested

2 languages (50% each of the average). Minimum of 7/20 for each language.
The 5 competences of the CEFR will be evaluated (modalities specified by the teacher).
Attention: compulsory attendance: more than 2 absences will compromise the validation of the semester.
Sessions 2 will cover the skills not validated in session 1 and will be managed individually by the teachers.
